Full Cassette vs Semi-Cassette vs Open Awnings: Which Is Best?

What is the difference between full cassette, semi-cassette and open awnings? Compare protection when closed, appearance, controls and cost to choose a suitable made-to-measure awning for your home.

a weinor full cassette awning to a patio in winchester hampshire

A full cassette awning encloses the fabric and folding arms when retracted. A semi-cassette provides partial enclosure, while an open awning leaves more of the mechanism exposed. The right choice depends on the shelter provided by your building, the appearance you want and your budget.

When comparing retractable patio awnings, it is easy to focus on fabric colour or motorised controls. But the housing matters too: it affects how the awning looks and how its components are protected while it is closed.

At Winchester Awnings, we help homeowners and businesses choose made-to-measure shading across Hampshire and neighbouring counties. Here is how the three designs compare and what to consider before choosing.

What Is an Awning Cassette?

The cassette is the housing into which a retractable awning closes. Depending on its design, it can cover the rolled fabric, folding arms and other components.

Cassette type describes the enclosure, rather than how you operate the awning. An open awning can be motorised, and available controls on cassette models depend on the product specification.

You may see “open cassette” used in comparisons, although open awning is the clearer term: it does not have a fully enclosing cassette.

What Is a Full Cassette Awning?

A full cassette awning retracts into an enclosed housing that protects the fabric and folding arms while it is not in use.

It is worth considering when the awning will sit on a wall with little overhead shelter, or where you want the folded mechanism concealed. Above patio or bifold doors, the closed cassette can also give the rear of the property a tidy finish.

Advantages of a Full Cassette Awning

Full enclosure reduces direct exposure of the stored fabric and arms to rain, dirt and debris. It also conceals more of the mechanism when the awning is retracted.

That can be useful for an awning left closed through much of autumn and winter. However, a cassette still needs appropriate care, and wet fabric should be allowed to dry when conditions permit.

Is a Full Cassette Awning Worth the Extra Cost?

It can be, especially where stored-component protection and appearance are priorities. But a full cassette is not automatically the best choice for every building.

We also assess the available mounting space, suitable structural fixings and the shade you need. A well-chosen semi-cassette or open model may be a sensible alternative in a sheltered position.

What Is a Semi-Cassette Awning?

A semi-cassette awning has a housing that provides partial enclosure when retracted. It typically covers the rolled fabric from above, while some of the arms or underside remain visible.

The amount of protection varies by model, so it is important to look beyond the category name.

For example, the Weinor Semina semi-cassette awning uses a housing and front profile to protect its fabric and mechanism. This should not be confused with similarly named products: check the exact model and enclosure design on your quotation.

When Does a Semi-Cassette Make Sense?

A semi-cassette is worth considering if you want protection for the stored fabric but do not require a completely enclosed housing.

It may offer a useful balance of appearance, protection and cost. Your building’s exposure and the particular product design will determine whether it is suitable.

What Is an Open Awning?

An open awning has no fully enclosing cassette. When retracted, its roller and folded arms remain more visible and exposed.

It can be a practical choice beneath a substantial roof overhang or another suitable sheltered mounting position. Some models offer an optional protective roof or cover, which adds protection without turning the awning into a full cassette design.

An open design does not necessarily mean basic construction or manual operation. The Weinor Topas II open awning, for example, has motorised and optional crank-drive specifications, together with optional protective components.

What Should You Check Before Choosing an Open Awning?

Consider whether the proposed location actually shelters the stored awning from wind-driven rain and debris. A small projection above the wall may provide less protection than you expect.

The survey should also establish whether an optional cover is appropriate and how accessible the awning will be for cleaning and maintenance.

Which Awning Type Is Best for UK Weather?

A full cassette generally provides the most complete enclosure when closed. Weather performance while extended depends on the individual awning, its size, installation and operating limits.

A cassette protects the stored awning; it does not make the extended fabric canopy stormproof or suitable for heavy rain.

For every design, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and retract the awning before strong winds develop. Compatible wind sensors can help reduce risk, but they do not guarantee protection from every sudden gust.

If the fabric becomes wet and must be retracted, extend it again to dry as soon as conditions are suitable.

Our guide to using an awning in wind and rain explains weather precautions and when a different shading structure may be more appropriate.

Does Cassette Type Affect How Much Shade You Get?

Cassette type alone does not determine the shaded area. Width, projection, installation height, pitch and the sun’s position all matter.

For example, an enclosed awning with insufficient projection may not shade the dining table where you need it. Equally, a larger awning needs suitable structural support and enough mounting space.

Start with how you want to use the patio, then choose a suitable model. Our awning size guide explains how these measurements work together.

Can Full, Semi-Cassette and Open Awnings Be Motorised?

Motorisation is available across these categories, although the options depend on the model.

If you want remote operation, compatible weather sensors or smart-home control, check the motor and control specification separately from the cassette design.

Our motorised vs manual awnings guide compares everyday convenience and the considerations involved in choosing controls.

Choosing an Awning Above Bifold or Patio Doors

Above large glazed doors, both shade coverage and the appearance of the closed awning matter. A full cassette may appeal if you want the folded arms concealed above the opening.

The survey must also account for mounting height, structural fixings and door clearance. An awning can intercept direct sunlight outside the glass, helping reduce glare and solar heat gain while extended.

Read our guide to awnings over bifold doors for more detail.

For privacy and flexible light control indoors, an awning can work alongside made-to-measure bifold door blinds from Winchester Blinds & Shutters. Our sister business can help you consider the shading needed on both sides of the glass.

Motorised Weinor awning extending over a patio in Winchester Hampshire

A Real Hampshire Project: Cassette Awnings in Itchen Abbas

At a home in Itchen Abbas, we installed two Somfy-motorised Weinor cassette awnings over a south-facing patio.

The homeowners wanted comfortable shade for outdoor dining and relaxing, as well as a shaded area for their dogs. Two awnings provided coverage across the patio while keeping a balanced appearance along the rear of the house.

See our Itchen Abbas awning installation case study to explore the finished project.

For a different layout, our three-awning installation in Alresford shows how multiple motorised awnings can shade a wide patio and the glazing behind it.

How Much Do Full, Semi-Cassette and Open Awnings Cost?

For broadly comparable specifications, an open awning often costs less than a fully enclosed model. Semi-cassette designs may sit between them.

However, cassette type is only one part of the quotation. Width, projection, fabric, motorisation, accessories, mounting brackets and installation work all affect the final price.

Compare quotations for the exact product and installation rather than assuming that all awnings in one category offer the same quality or features.

Our UK awning cost guide explains the main factors to consider.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cassette Awnings

What is the difference between full cassette and semi-cassette awnings?

A full cassette encloses the fabric and folding arms when retracted. A semi-cassette provides partial enclosure, with the amount of coverage depending on the model.

Is an open awning the same as an open cassette awning?

“Open cassette” is sometimes used to describe an open awning. An open awning does not have a fully enclosing cassette, so more of its roller and folding mechanism remains exposed when closed.

Is a full cassette awning waterproof?

A full cassette protects the stored fabric and arms, but it does not make an extended awning suitable for all rain conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular model and allow damp fabric to dry when safe to do so.

Can an open awning have a motor and wind sensor?

Yes, some open awnings offer motorisation and compatible wind sensors. These options depend on the selected model and control system.

Can a cassette awning stay outside through winter?

Cassette awnings are designed for permanent outdoor installation. Keep the awning retracted when not in use and follow the manufacturer’s guidance on cleaning, frost and winter operation.

Which cassette awning should I choose for my home?

Consider the building’s exposure, available mounting space, shade coverage, appearance and budget. Full enclosure may suit an exposed wall, while a semi-cassette or open design may be appropriate in a sheltered position. A site survey helps establish the right specification.
